Cognitive care during Alzheimer's Awareness Month

Each January, our partners at the Alzheimer Society support and lead Canada's Alzheimer's Awareness Month to encourage people across Canada to learn more about dementia and its impact.

Alzheimer's disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that destroys brain cells, causing thinking ability and memory to deteriorate over time. Alzheimer's disease is not a normal part of aging and is irreversible.

Because Alzheimer’s disease largely affects older adults, communities such as St. Catharines and Niagara are unquietly impacted due to their large 55+ populations. In 2024-2025, the Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region supported over 3,000 individuals living with Alzheimer's or caring for someone living with the disease.

Memory Care Kits

In 2020, SCPL teamed up with Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region to begin offering Memory Care Kits. Available in a variety of themes, Memory Care Kits come with a series of activities, photos, and tools to promote engagement, conversation and reminiscences.  The kits are designed to provide individuals with dementia fun and interesting reading materials and activities, and to help caregivers foster social interaction.  With these kits, we like to emphasize that it does not matter if the user performs the activities "correctly" or not.  It's all about creating fun interactions and enjoying oneself.

Connections First with Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region

Throughout the year, we also partner with the Alzheimer’s Society of Niagara Region to offer supportive programs for those impacted by dementia and their loved ones.

Join us for an upcoming session of Connections First with Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region to learn more about dementia, normal aging, healthy brain strategies, and future planning:

If you’re caring for someone living with Alzheimer’s disease, check out a memory care kit and join us for Connections First to find out how SCPL and Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region can support your journey.
