Teen Review: The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games

Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games, written by Suzanne Collins, is about a nation called Panem that is made up of twelve districts. Every year, one boy and one girl are chosen from each district to fight one another in the brutal Hunger Games. There are 24 contestants and only one winner can survive. Katniss Everdeen, a sixteen-year-old girl who always takes care of her family, volunteers to take her younger sister's place when she gets chosen for the games. Katniss must outsmart and fight through all her opponents as more challenges appear, and there are a lot of crazy twists and turns standing in her way.

This book does a great job at making you feel like you are experiencing Katniss Everdeen’s story. Suzanne Collins wrote this book from a first-person perspective, which I find to be uncommon when it comes to fiction books. There are many moments in this book that put you on the edge of your seat thinking, “What is going to happen next?!”. I remember how I used to stay up late just so I could read one more chapter because I couldn’t stop reading when there were cliffhangers. I also like how this book has shorter and well-spaced chapters because I always feel satisfied when I finish multiple chapters in one night. I do not think this is the best book of The Hunger Games series though, because the second book, Catching Fire, was even more exciting. Overall, I would rate this book a 4.3 out of 5 stars, and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes intense, suspenseful action and a good story that leaves you wanting more.
