Book trends we’re not falling for this season

We love exploring the world of books and hearing what others have to say about their reading experience. However, not all trends as sticking with us this season. Allow us to deinfluence you on these book trends that make books and reading less accessible and enjoyable.

1. Disliking a popular book or book series just because it's popular

When everyone is talking about a hot new book or book series, we will be the first to jump on the bandwagon. One thing we love most about books is their ability to bring us together in conversation (like in our book clubs). So, whether you like or dislike a certain book, author, or series, don’t consider it down and out just because its popular.

2. Believing a fun beach read is any less literary than a classic or non-fiction title

Reading to learn something new is awesome. Reading for the fun of it is… just as awesome! The value of a book is not always determined by the contents of the material, sometimes the most important thing about a book is the impact it has on your life while you’re reading it.

3. Thinking that Summer Reading Club is only for kids

Literacy is for everyone! No matter your age, you could be at risk of losing some of your literacy skills if you don’t make time for reading. This is why we have our Summer Reading Club, an all-ages, summer-long reading challenge that encourage you to keep flexing those literacy muscles during some of the busiest months of the year.

4. Finishing books we're not enjoying

That’s right. Your library is giving you permission to NOT read your library book. If you’re not enjoying the book you’re reading, you don’t have to finish it. You can simply return it to the library and try something else.

5. Claiming that audiobooks don't count as reading

We never discount the value of an audiobook. Just like reading a physical book, audiobooks help build vocabulary, flex your creativity and imagination, and challenge the comprehension center of your brain. Audiobooks have an added bonus of making literature more accessible to folks with reading or visual impairments and allow for screen-free relaxation or helpful multi-tasking!

6. Gatekeeping our favourite reads

We get it – sometimes our holds lists get long and it’s annoying to have to wait for the next book in a series because everyone is reading it. But we will never miss an opportunity to celebrate an awesome author and share something that makes us happy with our community.

If you’re also saying “no, thanks” to these trends, it might be time to visit the library to discover your next read.
