Teen Review: The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby
F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Great Gatsby follows the perspective of Nick Carraway, a man from Minnesota who moves to New York. He buys a house on “West Egg” in Long Island. His neighbour, Jay Gatsby is a mysterious man who lives in a grand mansion. Nick meets up with his cousin Tom, and a woman named Daisy Buchannan. They all get invited to one of Gatsby’s extravagant parties. There, Jay says that he wants to meet with Daisy, since they haven’t seen each other since he was drafted in World War I. They meet up, and it is clear they like each other more than friends, which outrages Tom. Gatsby’s love for Daisy was so strong that he decided to take the blame and face the consequences. This book, written in 1925, was one of the greatest of its time, and one of the greatest ever. It takes place around the same time it was written, which is a very interesting place in history. Jay Gatsby has a very interesting personality. His devotion to Daisy is very strong. It is interesting to see as the characters slowly uncover more about him and his past. The author did a very good job of making it easy to visualize scenes, which really added to the enjoyment of the book. I would recommend this book to everybody, particularly young readers. Overall, a very great story and a thrilling conclusion. 5 out of 5 stars
