Teen Review: Six of Crows

Six of Crows

Leigh Bardugo

Six of Crows is one of the best books I have ever picked up, so good to the point where my mind was replaying every moment. Leigh Bardugo creates such a masterpiece through story building, plots, and complicated characters with odd yet interesting dynamics. I didn’t know what to expect with all the plot twists and devious schemes she has up her sleeves.

The story of Six of Crows is about Kaz Brekker, a mastermind in scheming, plotting, and revenge, gathering a team of five other criminals to join him in a dangerous mission for a prize of thirty million Kruge (currency in this universe), for a merchant named Jan Van Eck. This book is based on one big scheme: Breaking into the Ice Court and rescuing Bo Yul-Bayur. It does an exceptional job of showing the dynamics, relationships, characteristics, and personalities of each one of the six characters, and focuses primarily on the heist itself.

I would say the strengths of this novel are the plotline and how the plot played out so smoothly and in such a satisfying way; NO plot holes involved. Bardugo nailed this! However, one weakness, in my opinion, may be how, at times, it's hard to keep up with all the maps and magic (although eventually, I got it down).

As a grade nine student, I recommend this book to anyone, regardless of genre preferences, because Bardugo's writing is so versatile. I love how she incorporated fantasy into an adventurous book.

I was nervous about picking up a book and putting in the dedication to finish it because I didn't know if the hype around this book was real. It turns out that Six of Crows completely exceeded my expectations. Leigh Bardugo does a phenomenal job of not overdoing anything and creating a bond, an emotional connection between the reader and the characters. I am looking forward to the sequel, Crooked Kingdom, as well as her other incredible work, and stoked to read books like Six of Crows in the future. This book is a solid five out of five!
