We hear it all the time: “I didn’t know the library had that!” While we’re excited to surprise and delight our community with all the wonderful items and resources you can unlock with your library card, we don’t want you to miss out. Which is why, this Library Card Sign Up Month, we’re here to tell you about the hidden gems of SCPL!
Non-traditional items
Many customers are surprised to learn about our non-traditional item collection known as the Library of Things. Our more-than-books approach to supporting our community means that you can borrow weird and wonderful items from the library for free, including musical instruments, telescope kits, parks passes, bird-watching kits, and more!
This assortment of non-traditional library items means that customers can explore a variety of new hobbies and skills without the initial upfront investment of purchasing materials to get started.
Video games
Despite their decade-long presence in the library, many customers don’t know that they can borrow video games for their favourite consoles for free. The latest PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch games are waiting for you at the library.
TV series on DVD
Imagine this: A new television show is coming out that you really want to watch, but it’s on a streaming platform you’re not subscribed to. Another $18/month doesn’t seem like a big deal, and you're definitely going to remember to cancel your subscription before the free trial period ends this time...right? If this situation sounds familiar to you (and lowkey stresses you out), save a few bucks on yet another streaming platform and borrow the television series on DVD for free from the library instead. Check out popular shows including Fallout (seasons 1-2), Shoresey (seasons 1-4), Severance (season 1), and Ted Lasso (seasons 1-3).
Gamerspace
The world of gaming is expensive – the consoles, controllers, headsets, and video games themselves. It’s hard to get started. This is why we introduced the Gamerspace to the Central Library. Equipped with gaming PCs, Ninentdo Switch consoles and an Xbox series X console, the Gamerspaces gives all-ages access to library card holders who don’t have these systems at home.
Book Bundles
Have you ever wanted to settle in and read, but you don’t know what book to borrow, so instead of reading you just end up doomscrolling for the next two hours? That’s okay, because we've figured out the perfect solution to your analysis paralysis: our Book Bundles service. Here’s how it works – you fill out a form telling us about your reading habits and preferences. Tell us about your favourite book genres, preferred reading format, authors you love, authors you hate – literally anything – and we will use your details to hand-pick a selection of books we know you’ll devour! Let us be your personal (library) shopper!
