Ways to cool off at the library this summer
It’s been a hot summer, St. Catharines! And while we have been loving the heat, some unpredictable weather has got us looking around for some indoor activities. Luckily, SCPL has just the things to help you beat the heat and keep you from getting bored this season:
Reading a book
To state the obvious, the library has a lot of books to choose from. But better yet, we have a ton of comfy reading spots for you to dive into a new novel, magazine or newspaper. Stop by the library and stay as long as you need (within our service hours, of course) to cool off and enjoy the space.
Puzzles and board games
It’s our opinion that one of the best ways to lock in for a chill afternoon is with a puzzle or board game. Whether you’re flying solo or visiting the library with friends, you can pick from a selection of puzzles and games from our Library of Things collection to pass the time. If you love your find, you can even borrow it for free with your library card.
Pro tip: The library offers drop-in activities on Friday afternoons, like Drop-In: Board Games & Puzzles and Drop-In: Chess & Chat. Check out our Events Calendar to discover the next drop-in program.
Gamerspace
SCPL’s not-so-hidden gem can be found at the Central Library. Our Gamerspace is decked our with gaming computers, Nintendo Switch consoles, and an Xbox Series X console. This all-ages space lets you explore different video games and formats all for free with your library card.
Children's toys
Did you know that each of our library branches has a dedicated space for play with free access to a circulating collection of children’s toys? The whole family can beat the heat at the library as your child practices their motor skills, explores different sensory experiences, and flexes their imagination.
